Imo North re-run: PDP raises alarm says ‘ APC plans to intimidate voters with soldiers’

The opposition, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Imo State, has alleged that the ruling, All Progressives Congress, APC, plan to flood Ehime-Mbano with soldiers as from Friday night to intimidate voters in the various communities during the Imo North Senatorial District re-run election slated for Saturday. The
candidate of the PDP, Athan Achonu, is from the area.

The PDP raised the alarm in a statement signed by its acting chairman, Sir. Martins Ejiogu. The party said the objective of the plan is to prevent voters from the area from exercising their right of choice freely. It called on Nigerians, civil society groups and the international community to intervene in order to prevent breakdown of law and order, adding that election should not be a do or die affair.

“With regard to the Imo-North re-run election slated for tomorrow 23rd July, 2016, it has just come to our notice that there are plans to use Federal might to flood Ehime-Mbano with soldiers as from tonight to intimidate voters in the various communities. We hereby bring this to the notice of the public, Civil Society groups and Security Agencies; and urge them to intervene so as to protect our fragile democracy and prevent breakdown of law and order. This election should not be made to look as if it is a do or die affair,” the statement reads.

It will be recalled that APC and PDP have continued to trade words ahead of the rerun election as well as rerun elections in Isiala Mbano and Oru East state constituencies.

Saturday will be the fourth time that the people of Imo North Senatorial district will seek to elect their representative after three failed attempts.
